The Artists of Conscience Galleries

“This is such an amazing idea!  Not just showcasing emerging artists, which is great, but showcasing their depth of social conscience, which is even greater.  Good work, Victoria!”
...a Galleries visitor

Throughout the month of October, 2006 the Victoria International Arts Symposium and the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria worked in partnership to present the “Artists of Conscience Galleries.”

All work displayed and performed in the galleries during this period addressed some of the most pressing social issues of today. Participants included both local artists and artists who also spoke at the Symposium. The galleries provided the public with a view of this region’s leading socially-engaged artwork, and a preview of what was to come from October 27-30th.

The "Artists of Conscience Galleries" were produced in conjunction with the "Phantom Galleries" project initiated by the Community Arts Council of Greater Victoria.

The “Phantom Galleries” aim to create beautiful displays of art in empty storefronts in order to build bridges between Victoria's downtown business community, local citizens, artists, politicians, educators and tourists.  In so doing, the project helps to improve the economic atmosphere in Victoria and raise awareness and appreciation of the value and meaning of the arts to the community.

The Phantom Galleries sponsors are:  City of Victoria, DVBA, DVCA, BCAC, Island Blue Arts Supplies, CRD, and BC Gaming.
