KIKA THORNE

Panelist
Video Artist ~ Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

For a decade Kika Thorne has made film and video art which spans the super 8 underground, experimental public access television, international museums, festivals, and mainstream broadcasting; she has produced 23 short films and seven film or video loops projected to sculptural effect.

For many single channel videos, the tension between narrative and structure reworked casual observations of friends and our scenes into structural and political critique, embodied by formal and conceptual invention. Over time this strategy drifted into other media: postcards, stencils, photographs, poster or slide narratives, architectural propositions, essays and civic intervention.

Exhibitions include: Zones curated by Harm Lux, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Hamilton; The disOrder of things curated by Mike Hoolboom, Kino Arsenal, Berlin; Substitute City curated by Philip Monk, Power Plant, Toronto; 25hours curated by Manuel Saiz, Luisa Ortínez + Jorge Bravo, CCCB, Barcelona; Architecture curated by Tom Strickland, Artcity, Calgary; Old Habits Die Hard curated by Heman Chong, Lise Nellemann + Louise Witthoft, Sparwasser, Berlin, Norwich, Oslo, Dresden; Metro-Ago-Go curated by Janna Graham + the AGO Teen Council, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto; E-Flux Video curated by Stefanie Schulte Strathaus, KW, Berlin.
