ARTISTS OF CONSCIENCE
The theme for the inaugural Victoria International Arts Symposium was "Artists of Conscience" - an examination of how an artist's work is influenced by their awareness of and/or their involvement in vital and sometimes controversial contemporary social issues.
OCTOBER 27 - 30, 2006
The Symposium featured four intense days of provocative keynote speakers, dynamic panels of professional artists from around the world and lively audience interaction. Artists from all disciplines discussed, debated and celebrated their work and its relevance to ecology, indigenous communities, architecture, war and violence, politics and a myriad of other local and global concerns.
The Symposium’s keynote speakers and panel sessions were held in the Victoria Conference Centre and the McPherson Theatre from Friday, October 27 through Monday, October 30. Several of the Symposium’s guest artists will also be exhibiting or performing their work during these four exciting days.
DOWNTOWN VICTORIA • OCTOBER, 2006
From October 1st, in conjunction with the Downtown Victoria Business Association and the Arts Council of Greater Victoria's "Phantom Galleries" project, a wide range of community and professional artists were invited to show their work in temporary galleries and performance venues. Hosted in participating retail businesses, vacant storefronts and empty spaces converted under the Symposium's thematic umbrella, the "Artists of Conscience Galleries" enticed residents and tourists alike to take part in an artistic treasure hunt throughout the downtown core.
For a full listing of all "Artists of Conscience" Galleries check out the GALLERIES page - and look for a list of related dance, theatre, special guest speakers and film & video screenings under GALLERIES > GALLERY EVENTS.
